This music was commissioned by AXIS Dance Company for a new piece choreographed by Marc Brew (www.marcbrew.com), which premiered in April 2014.

Marc and I enjoyed a rich collaboration with AXIS to develop the dance and score for Divide simultaneously. Starting points included pieces by visual artist Carl Andre that appealed to Marc in their architectural use of space. Early considerations were regarding minimalism, shape and design - literally how to divide space.

From there I reflected on forces that unite and divide, which resulted directly in some sounds (scissors, breath, writing) as well as indirectly in themes (eg. streams, clocks, traveling, traffic, borders, negotiation, unity, isolation, entanglement, individuation) that informed choices in instrumentation, timbre, density, and energy.

The process of Marc and I responding to each other's material and input along the way resulted in a strong synergy between the movement and the music, carefully framed by lighting designed by Allen Willner in collaboration with Marc.
